In 2020, I had the honor of throwing my very first protest in remembrance of the late Shaheen Mackey Sr.

In 2018, tragedy struck my best friend's family when his father, Shaheen Mackey, fell victim to police brutality. I decided to organize a peaceful protest in honor of Shaheen. The idea gained tremendous support from the community, and what
began as a mere concept evolved into a successful protest with over 100
participants. The event received national coverage and even garnered
support from the prominent organization "Black Lives Matter."

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – A peaceful protest for Shaheen Mackey started at the Luzerne County Prison Sunday, where his family says correctional officers’ use of force led to his death.

“We’re not going to stop until we receive justice. Justice for Shaheen Mackey,” said Tatiyanee Mackey, Shaheen’s daughter.

Protesters demand justice for Shaheen Mackey

WILKES-BARRE — Dressed in red and loud enough for the whole city to hear, about a hundred protesters organized outside of the Luzerne County Correctional Facility in support of Shaheen Mackey and his family on Sunday.

Mackey died on June 6, 2018, after he was transported from the Luzerne County Correctional Facility, where he had been lodged for five hours on a warrant related to a PFA, to Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
